Richard “Dick” Karstad, 3/10/24

Greg Kaster, longtime professor of History and African Studies. He was the inaugural James and Patricia McPherson Endowed Professor of American History.

Robert Moline, the College's first professor of Geography. He helped found the Environmental Studies program.

Greg Kaster, faculty, Minneapolis, on 6/22/24. A longtime professor of History and African Studies with expertise in the history of labor, American dissent, and slavery and abolitionism. In 2018 he was awarded the Edgar M. Carlson Award, the college’s highest teaching honor, and he was the inaugural James and Patricia McPherson Endowed Professor of American History. He is survived by his wife, Kate Wittenstein, professor emeritus in History and Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies.

Robert Moline, former faculty, Saint Peter, on 1/23/24. After graduating from Augustana College, he served in the Air Force from 1955–59. He returned to school, receiving his master’s degree from the University of Illinois and his PhD from the University of Minnesota. He was the College's first professor of Geography and helped to found the Environmental Studies program. He is survived by his wife, Kay Rethwill Moline ’56, plus two children and a stepdaughter including Karen Wallin ’91. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jan Moline.

Ranae J. Peterson, former faculty, Mankato, on 4/21/24. She was a part of the Modern Foreign Language department at Gustavus from 1958–1966, where she met and married Bob Peterson ’58, vice president of development at Gustavus. After raising her sons, she returned to Gustavus as a member of the administrative staff. She is survived by two sons, Mark ’88, and Kevin ’94, and their families. She was preceded in death by Bob in 2012.
