Virginia Caine ’73 is an associate professor of medicine at Indiana University and president of the National Medical Association. She received a Distinguished Alumni Citation from her alma mater, Gustavus Adolphus College, in 2025.
The NMA is the largest collective voice of Black and African American physicians in the United States. Since its founding in 1895, the National Medical Association has been a leading force for change within American healthcare, particularly regarding racial and racist health disparities. She was inducted as the 125th president of the organization in 2025. Prior to roles at Indiana University and with the NMA, she worked for or attended State University of New York Upstate Medical Center; the University of Cincinnati; the University of Washington, Seattle; and Johns Hopkins University.
