Elgene “Gene” Lund, died on 10/18/25. Gene, who lived until age of 101, and her husband, Doniver, came to Gustavus 80 years ago, in 1946, as head residents in Johnson Hall. Doniver taught in the History department and Gene was a newly minted RN having received her degree from Bethesda Lutheran Hospital in St. Paul. Prior to her long career at Gustavus, she worked at the Community Hospital in Saint Peter and the Oaklawn Nursing Home. She cared for many Gusties in her 25 years in health service, and at her home just south of campus, where the Lunds often had Gustavus students live in their basement apartment. She retired from Gustavus in 1997 and was named an Honorary Gustie in 2024. Gene is survived by her three daughters and their families including: Rebecca Lund Otterness ’69, Renee Lund ’72, and Ruth Lund Neely ’75.

Mark H. Anderson ’66, former vice president and dean of Admissions, died on 11/5/25. Anderson worked as a teacher and merchandise manager at Dayton’s before he came to Gustavus in 1978 to begin what would be a 32-year career. During that time, he served as director of Cooperative Education and assistant dean, director of Admissions, associate vice president for the Office of Development, vice president for Admissions and Financial Aid, and vice president for Enrollment Management. Finally, he held the title of dean of Admissions during the 2009–10 academic year as he helped the college during his transition into retirement. He cherished the opportunity to get to know students and their families. In recognition of this work, Mark was awarded the Eric Norelius Award (1994), the Diversity Honors Award (2005), the Greater Gustavus Award (2010), and the Sesquicentennial Award (2011–12). Generations of Gusties were drawn to Gustavus because of him, mentored by him, and celebrated by him. Mark is survived by his wife, Frances “Frani’ Peterson Anderson ’67 and his daughter, Lindsey Anderson Carlson ’96. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph ’95.
