BOARD OF TRUSTEE MEMBERS

Carl M. Johnson, 4/15/2025. He served on the Board of Trustees from 1981–1988.

Dennis Sobolik, 5/12/2025. He served on the Board of Trustees from 1982–1989.

Thomas Hirsch ’64, 3/28/2025. He had a successful career in property management and real estate investment. An avid supporter of Gustavus, he served on the Gustavus Board of Trustees from 2004–2010, as well as on the Executives Forum and the National Campaign Council for Phoenix and the Twin Cities. He is survived by his wife, Sonja Alvheim Hirsch ’60.

Miriam Peterson Manfred ’39, 11/28/2024. Our longest living alum, who passed away at the age of 107. A former schoolteacher who married a pastor, Carl Manfred ’39, she became very active in parish life. She was a former member of the Gustavus Alumni Board and served for many years on the Gustavus Library Associates. She played the Gustavus Alma Mater on the piano at the St. Lucia Luncheon well into her nineties. She is survived by four children: Peter ’66, Mark, Carol Manfred Sack ’72, and David.

Jack R. Niemi ’68, 1/15/2025. After graduating
from Gustavus, he went on to Northwestern Lutheran
Theological Seminary and received his Master of Divinity.
He served various parishes, coming back to Gustavus in
2002 as vice president of Church Relations until 2005,
then going on to Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Johns Niemi ’69, and two
sons, Ted ’92 and Jason ’94.

Ronald Timmerman ’75, 10/28/2024. After working in the building trades, he came back to Gustavus and had a 35-year career, retiring in 2015 as the associate director of Advancement. He is survived by his wife, Jane Stenehjem Timmerman ’75, and two daughters, Rebecca and Amanda Timmerman Skalsky ’08.
